  • Outrage over homophobic chants at Le Classique.
  • Videos of the incident spread online.
  • Paris Saint-Germaine fans are under fire.

Once again, homophobic chants made headlines in the global sports world, this time stemming from Le Classique in France.

The chants from Paris Saint-Germain fans, directed at Olympique de Marseille players, tainted French football once more.

This has sparked a widespread call for sanctions.

Olivier Klein, the inter-ministerial delegate for the fight against racism, anti-Semitism and anti-LGBTQ+ hatred (Dilcrah), released a video on Monday.

In the video, Paris Saint-Germain supporters are heard yelling homophobic chants at their Marseille rivals.

Paris Saint-Germain defeated Marseille 4-0 at Parc des Princes.

«Very shocked by the unbearable homophobic chants heard at the Parc des Princes,» Klein said on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter.

He stated that he would request that the PSG authorities and the French league sanction those responsible and did not rule out the possibility of legal action.

In another video, some PSG players were captured shouting insults at Marseille fans while celebrating at the end of the match.

France’s Minister of Sports, Amelie Oudea-Castera, joined the criticism.

She said the disciplinary committee of the French league would need to investigate what happened and urged PSG to file a complaint.

This is to «identify the culprits and bring them to justice, so they can be banned from the stadiums.»

«It is inconceivable to turn a deaf ear to such chants of hatred and homophobia in our stands,» the minister said.

«Regardless of the rivalry and what was at stake, they must be unequivocally rejected by the fans, all those involved in the competition and the authorities.

«Yesterday, these chants spoiled the celebration at Parc. We urgently need to eradicate them from our stadiums.»

French clubs have been fined, and the league’s disciplinary committee has also ordered partial stand closures for similar cases in recent years.

Furthermore, French law allows for prison sentences of up to one year and fines of approximately $47,600 for uttering anti-gay insults in public.

PSG stated in a release that they condemn all forms of discrimination and are considering «enhancing their prevention measures in the fight against homophobia.»

The French league champions added that a meeting with all their partners would be held in the coming days to address the situation.

Club executives have tolerated homophobic chants for a long time, often heard at French league matches.
