Hispanic mom with 2 kids dies when liposuction goes wrong

Sara Gómez, a 39-year-old woman of Spanish origin, was hospitalized on December 2, 2021. She died last Saturday after spending almost a month in the intensive care unit due to a failed liposuction operation.

The newspaper La Opinion reports that this sort of surgery normally costs around $6,500. Gómez supposedly looked, «wounded as if she had been in a knife fight,» due to the complications of the operation performed in Cartagena, Spain.

Police are in search of surgeon’s whereabouts

As reported by The Opinion, the police in Spain are attempting to determine the whereabouts of the doctor, who is allegedly Chilean. This information was made public because the incident occurred in the Galna private clinic. The doctor is suspected of trying to flee the country.

According to the Olive Press, the anonymous surgeon allegedly informed the relatives that everything had gone well but that the patient was losing a lot of fluids and that they were working to stabilize her.

It was surreal

Three hours after the surgeon told the family that the patient was stable, she had to be rushed to Santa Lucía University General Hospital, where she entered a state of hypovolemic shock. She was in a serious condition at that time.

Ruben Gomez, brother of the deceased, told local media that the situation was surreal. According to statements, the mother of two children suffered multiple serious injuries. Several of her organs, such as the kidney, liver, duodenum, colon, and intestine, were left with holes as a result of the liposuction procedure.

Authorities are unable to draw conclusions about what happened

The lawyer assigned to the case is Ignacio Martinez, who described the victim’s injuries as, «more typical of the result of a fight with knives,» and said they do not understand what exactly happened.

He added: «I have faced many cases of cosmetic surgery, but what happened here is incomprehensible.» A spokesman for the family commented that they were awaiting the results of the autopsy since they are planning to file a complaint against the plastic surgeon, who is supposedly of Chilean descent. According to Daily Mirror, Sara left behind a daughter and a young son.

Here’s what is known about the surgeon

According to Official Press, the surgeon who performed the operation started his degree in Chile. He continued it in Murcia and finished it in Naples, Italy. Until May 2020, he was a cardiovascular surgeon with the Murcian Health Service.

Furthermore, it was revealed that a short time ago, he obtained a master’s in aesthetics and anti-aging medicine from Complutense University of Madrid. Official Press also commented that he has accumulated thousands of followers on social media. In his profile, he describes his qualifications as follows: International Board Certified in Cosmetic Surgery, body contouring expert, and facial, body, and vascular cosmetic surgery doctor.

The surgery was complicated for Sara due to her health status

The father of Sarah’s son, Ezequiel Nicolás, talked about what happened on the television program «Everything Is True» hosted by Risto Mejide in Cuatro. He said that, «a doctor advised her against having surgery because she was not suitable. She didn’t have enough fat to undergo the operation.» The surgeon who operated on her is now one of law enforcement’s most wanted people.

Esequiel Nicolás commented on all the complications that his deceased wife had at the time of the operation: «They had to intervene because she had perforations in the intestine. Her colon was destroyed and she had necrosis, a perforation in the lung and her organs were failing,» added Nicolás, according to the Official Press portal.

The surgeon did not appear to testify due to a citation error

The surgeon who performed the botched liposculpture on Sara Gómez did not appear in court on Tuesday. He was summoned to be there at 10 a.m. regarding the complaint filed by the family for reckless homicide. Sara’s family lawyer stated that there is no confirmation that the summons for the doctor’s statement was delivered in a timely manner, so this could be the reason for his absence.

According to Telecinco.es, Ezequiel Nicolás, husband of the deceased mother of two children, said that he would appear at the trial. «I want all those responsible to sit on the bench to testify.» The family, in general, is waiting for the surgeon responsible for the victim’s death to be apprehended.
