The Haitian community in the United States, which numbers at least one million people, half of whom reside in South Florida, is speaking out.
The immigrants express their frustration over comments made by former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump, who alleged that they eat dogs and cats.
Outraged, Haitians in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood told EFE that Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, must stop spreading «dangerous lies.»
They accuse Trump of demonizing them through a series of anti-immigrant comments made in recent days.
HAITIANS RESPOND TO DONALD TRUMP
Seated in front of a colorful house next to a truck where she sells clothes, 75-year-old Yolande Fertil shook her head in disbelief at Trump’s words.
«In Springfield (Ohio), the people who arrived are eating dogs, eating cats, eating the pets of people living there,» the New York magnate declared.

This statement was made during Tuesday’s debate with Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
«It’s wrong, wrong, wrong. Haitians are angry,» Fertil told EFE, stating that she plans to vote «Democrat» on November 5th.
«No Respect for Any Country»
While watching some cats drink water inside a nearby barbershop, one of the employees expressed disbelief, unwilling to discuss the topic.
Another customer, who did not want to give his name, said Donald Trump «doesn’t respect any country or anyone and is only playing politics.»
«He doesn’t want people to vote for Kamala,» he explained, adding that the Republican is inciting racism.
Virginia Francois, cleaning the floors of the First Interdenominational Haitian Church, told EFE it’s all about respect: «Respect people, and people will respect you,» she exclaimed.
Why is There «Hatred» Toward Haitian Migrants?
For Paul Christian Namphy, political director of the Family Action Network Movement (FANM), it’s «very serious» that Trump repeated these lies in a «debate for the highest office in the country, in front of the entire nation.»
These are «insulting, ugly words, demonizing our community,» said Namphy, one of the leading voices of Florida’s Haitian organizations, noting that this conspiracy against Haitians started days earlier.
«It’s a plan to demonize and criminalize not only the Haitian community but all immigrant communities. It’s also an attack on people of color in general,» he told EFE.
«When we hear Elon Musk (owner of the X platform, who also spread the lie), when we hear JD Vance, it’s an insult to us,» Namphy added.
What Impact Have Donald Trump’s Words Had?
Donald Trump’s false statements seem to have had an effect in Springfield, Ohio, where around 10,000 Haitians have settled in recent years.
The area has been plagued by bomb threats in schools and public offices over the past two days.
While no official link between the two events has been made, the city’s mayor, Rob Rue, has called for «help, not hate.»
Namphy lamented that Haitian communities are facing racism in states like Ohio and Indiana, where they’ve been arriving in recent years, often due to labor demands.
Have Racist Comments Increased?
«Unfortunately,» Namphy said, «there is a lot of racism in these states tied, among other things, to the conspiracy theory of the Great Replacement,» which claims that migrants «will arrive and become the majority.»
Most Haitian immigrants live in South Florida, with other significant populations in New York, Massachusetts, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and California.
Trump’s unacceptable, desperate remarks, along with the issue of deportations—a key concern for the Haitian community—»will definitely impact the vote,» Namphy emphasized.
«We need to know who is promoting our interests… we must reject hate, division, racism, and lies,» he said.
What Are Activists Demanding?
In particularly tight races, such as in Georgia, Haitians could play a pivotal role in securing a victory.
Namphy added that the community is focused on a new designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
This would benefit 300,000 current TPS holders, protecting them from deportation, and an additional 200,000 new Haitian migrants who need it.
