The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed this Monday that her mobile phone and email account were hacked after the handover of 29 drug traffickers to the United States on February 27, as reported by The New York Times.

“My phone and email account were hacked. Apple immediately contacted the Government’s Digital Transformation Agency. They properly noticed the hacking, the Digital Transformation Agency took action and quickly reviewed it,» declared the president during her morning press conference.

Sheinbaum acknowledged the information from the New York newspaper, which published on Friday that «shortly after the handover» of the criminals to the United States, «Sheinbaum’s cell phone was hacked, according to several people familiar with the matter».

However, she clarified that the identity of those responsible is still unknown.

“They are investigating, it’s hard to know who did it,” she commented.

In February, the Mexican authorities carried out an «unprecedented» transfer of 29 inmates to the United States, including drug lords such as Rafael Caro Quintero, leader of the Guadalajara Cartel, and two leaders of Los Zetas, Miguel Ángel and Omar Treviño Morales.

The president clarified that the phone number that was hacked had already been leaked in February 2024, when she was still a presidential candidate.

Despite this, she decided to keep it out of «affection,» since it was given to her in 2008 by the current governor of Campeche, Layda Sansores, when both participated in the women’s brigades in defense of oil, known as ‘Las Adelitas’.

Regarding the compromised email account, Sheinbaum detailed that it is her first account, hosted on the Yahoo server, and that many people have access to it.

She clarified that she also has a government account that meets the necessary security protocols.

“It’s a very old account, that many people have, and I also have the government account, which has all the security conditions and so on, so that’s how it was. Indeed, I don’t know how this reporter learned about the hacking.”
