Dozens of organizations in Texas harshly criticized Republican Governor Greg Abbott on Monday, according to EFE.

This is because the governor signed a package of three anti-immigrant laws at the Brownsville border with Mexico.

The most controversial of these laws, SB4, gives local police departments the power to arrest anyone who they think has crossed the border illegally.

It also allows local judges to deport those individuals.

Civil rights organizaitons reject Greg Abbott’s policies

The signing of these laws has unleashed powerful opposition from various organizations and civil rights activists.

In a protest near the border, a group of more than forty people led by La Unión del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) and Frontera Texas Organizing Project expressed their anger at the new law.

This protest marks the beginning of a campaign that has gained the support of more than 50 community organizations in light of Abbott’s actions.

In addition, they promised hold more demonstrations in the coming months.

Is the Texas immigration law xenophobic?

Tania A. Chávez Camacho, director of LUPE, spoke out about the Texas immigration law.

She highlighted at the protest that Governor Abbott and his allies are turning Texas into a safe place for only a small group of xenophobic and anti-immigrant people.

As a result, they are becoming hostile to the majority of Texans.

Likewise, she pointed out that they will continue to organize and demonstrate both in the streets, and in the courts, against these policies.

The ACLU promises to sue Greg Abbott

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas announced its intention to file a lawsuit against SB4.

They said that they consider it one of the most radical and anti-immigrant law in the country and it will cause harm to the most vulnerable people.

Sarah Cruz, border and immigrant rights policy and advocacy strategist at the ACLU of Texas, expressed concern that this law will lead to more civil rights violations.

Cruz highlighted that SB4 not only violates international and federal law, but also interferes with the asylum process, according to EFE.

Civil rights groups won’t back down

Cruz urged the community to remain vigilant and resist these laws that affect black, brown, indigenous communities and all people of color in Texas.

Fernando García, executive director of the Border Network for Human Rights (BNHR), issued a release after Abbot’s decision.

He warned that dozens of organizations in Texas are committed to resisting the anti-immigrant agenda led by the governor.

For his part, Domingo García, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), accused Abbott and the Texas Legislature of abusing their power. See a video of Greg Abbott signing the Texas immigration law HERE.
