New York Governor Kathy Hochul is facing strong criticism after stating she would work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to deport undocumented immigrants who commit crimes.
Pro-immigrant organizations, including Make the Road New York and the Immigration Coalition, accused her of fueling “the horrific agenda” of mass deportations promised by President-elect Donald Trump.
During a recent press conference, Hochul emphasized her support for legal immigration.
However, she reiterated that she would be “the first to call ICE” to report those who break the law.
GOVERNOR KATHY HOCHUL’S WORDS WERE: “I DON’T WANT THEM HERE”
“I don’t want them here. I don’t want them terrorizing my citizens,” stated the Democratic governor.
These remarks contrast sharply with her previous stance, where she pledged to protect New Yorkers from Trump’s mass deportation policies.

Natalia Aristizábal, co-director of Make the Road New York, described Governor Kathy Hochul’s comments as “a shocking lack of leadership.”
In a statement, she argued that New York should be a haven for immigrants rather than a place where they are demonized.
Meanwhile, the director of the Immigration Coalition wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that elected officials must “stand up for all our immigrant neighbors.”
As the January 20 inauguration of Donald Trump nears, tensions are escalating.
Trump’s promise of mass deportations has stirred fear among immigrant communities, many of whom view New York as a stronghold of protection.
Hochul’s recent statements, however, have cast doubt on the state’s commitment to supporting its vulnerable populations.
This controversial debate is not new.
This isn’t the first time Governor Kathy Hochul has faced backlash over her stance on immigration.
Earlier this year, she called for the deportation of immigrants involved in an altercation with a police officer in Times Square, a position that also sparked controversy at the time.
Now, activists worry her remarks signal a shift in the state’s immigration policies.
