Police found Genesse Ivone Moreno’s mother at her house and they took her to the hospital where her grandson is.
«The most important thing… we ask for your prayers for that child to recover,» said Troy Finner, the Chief of the Houston Police Department (HPD).
Chief Finner held a press conference at HPD headquarters to reveal details of the investigation into the shooting carried out by Genesse Ivonne Moreno.
«We are not going to speculate about the woman’s motive… that would be irresponsible, but we will give some of the facts proven during the investigation,» Chief Finner explained.
Genesse Ivone Moreno was carrying an AR-15 rifle and the little boy in her arms

According to police, Genesse Ivonne Moreno arrived at 1:53 at Lakewood Church, 3700 Southwest Freeway, in a white car.
The shooter was dressed in trenchcoat, had on a backpack and was carrying two rifles, one of which was an AR-15, along with her 7-year-old child.
Moreno pointed a gun at an unarmed Lakewood Church security guard and began firing as soon as she was inside the church.
Troy Finner, HPD Chief, explained at the press conference on Monday, February 12, 2024, that it is still unclear how Genesse Ivonne Moreno obtained the rifles.
One of the rifles had a ‘Palestine’ sticker

According to HPD investigators, the barrel of the woman’s rifle had ‘Palestine’ sticker.
However, Chief Finner emphasized that for the moment they do not know whether Genesse Ivonne Moreno’s attack was motivated by the situation in Palestinian.
What investigators did say is that, they found alleged anti-Semitic propaganda linked to a personal matter in Moreno’s home.
Genesse Ivonne Moreno’s former in-laws are Jewish. She was involved in a custody dispute with them over her child.
The shooter’s ex-husband is a convicted sex offender

Genesse Ivonne Moreno had been arrested several times in Montgomery County for various crimes and even for illegal weapons possession.
It is not yet clear to HPD investigators whether she received appropriate medical help for her mental health issues.
Additionally, according to Texas public records, in 2022 Walli Carranza, Genesse Ivonne Moreno’s ex-mother-in-law accused her and her mother of keeping her away from her grandson.
Things get even more complicated because Enrique Carranza III, Genesse Ivonne Moreno’s ex-husband, is a convicted sex offender.
Genesse Ivonne Moreno also went by the alias ‘Jeffery Genesse Escalante’

In 2022, Genesse Ivonne Moreno asked a Montgomery County judge for two protective orders against her ex-husband Enrique Carranza.
She alleged that her ex-husband Enrique Carranza threatened her through messages and on social media.
Investigators also found that in the past Genesse Ivonne Moreno made donations to the Lakewood Church through social media.
Genesse Ivonne Moreno also sometimes used the alias ‘Jeffery Genesse Escalante.’ Although she apparently did not identify as trans.
