Gene Hackman, the legendary Academy Award-winning actor, was found dead at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
His wife, Betsy Arakawa, and their dog were also discovered deceased at the residence.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adán Mendoza confirmed the grim discovery around midnight on Wednesday.
Authorities have not found immediate evidence of foul play at the scene.
Investigation Underway into Gene Hackman’s Death
The cause of Gene Hackman’s death remains undetermined.
«We are in the preliminary phase of the inquiry,» stated Sheriff Mendoza.
Hackman was regarded as one of the greatest actors of his generation.
His breakthrough role in Bonnie & Clyde (1967) earned him his first Oscar nomination.
Gene Hackman skyrocketed to stardom with The French Connection (1971), which won him his first Academy Award for Best Actor.
Other notable performances were: Scarecrow (1973) where he starred alongside Al Pacino.
The Conversation (1974), directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Superman (1978), where he portrayed Lex Luthor alongside Christopher Reeve and Marlon Brando.
And Mississippi Burning (1988) which earned him another Best Actor Oscar nomination.
He won his second Academy Award with Unforgiven (1992), this time for Best Supporting Actor in Clint Eastwood’s iconic Western.
