Beatriz Fernández, better known as Gigi Fernández, is undoubtedly the greatest tennis player in Puerto Rico’s history.

Not only is she the only one to have reached the number one spot in the world rankings, but she’s also the only Puerto Rican player admitted to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

On top of that, she clinched 17 Grand Slam titles in doubles, solidifying her status as one of the finest doubles players ever.

Fernández retired from tennis in 1997 and shortly after became a coach. A true Puerto Rican pride.

In 2010, tennis player Gigi Fernández publicly came out of the closet following an interview with The New York Times.

Later, in a conversation with El Nuevo Día, she revealed that she had been in the closet for 25 years.

«My mom, a devout Catholic, didn’t accept the decision, and she didn’t speak to me for 13 years,» Gigi shared.

Moreover, she said that returning to Puerto Rico caused her a lot of stress, and she hardly spoke to her parents. She felt more accepted in the U.S.

In the same interview, tennis player Gigi Fernández acknowledged that living in the closet is very challenging, but she gradually was able to come out.

«One day after 9/11, my mom finally accepted me, but I was pushing and pushing,» she said.

Gigi added that she went to her mother’s house and told her that she loved her and that they had to resolve this situation.

That was also when she met Gigi’s partner, professional golfer Jane Geddes.

According to Primera Hora, Gigi Fernández and Jane Geddes attempted to adopt a child in Florida in 2007.

However, after filling out a lengthy questionnaire, they were asked about their sexual orientation. That’s when they realized it wouldn’t be a simple process.

On two other occasions, they tried to adopt in California, but it was also not possible, albeit for different reasons.

Later on, the tennis player became pregnant after a friend donated her eggs, which were fertilized with sperm from an anonymous donor.

On April 7, 2009, tennis player Gigi Fernández gave birth to twins Madison and Karson.

Many people were supportive when she came out publicly. One person who stood by her was human rights activist Pedro Julio Serrano.

«It’s a day of great pride, not only for our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities but for all Puerto Ricans.»

Serrano said that the announcement that a beloved athlete like Gigi is gay gave hope to thousands of children and young people.

According to WTA Tennis, Gigi Fernández attended Clemson University for a year. Later, she opted to pursue professional tennis.

However, she later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of South Florida, as well as a Master’s in Business Administration.

After her retirement, she became a registered stockbroker and financial advisor, among other things.

«You can’t teach tennis forever. I’m definitely an entrepreneur,» she remarked.
