Gabriela Deras faces a homicide charge for her baby’s death
The Homicide Division of the Houston Police Department (HPD) conducted the investigation against Gabriela Elyzabeth Deras.

On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, the Houston Fire Department (HFD) responded to an emergency call.
HFD paramedics arrived at 5901 Long Drive, southeast Houston, at 3:25 p.m. to assist an unconscious baby in a car.
That day the temperature reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit
Gabriela Elyzabeth Deras had gone to the Harris Center at that address, which is an institution for patients with emotional problems.
Allegedly, the Hispanic woman Gabriela Elyzabeth Deras had arrived at the location with her four-year-old son and her two-month-old baby to visit someone.
On that hot summer day, temperatures in Houston reached a brutal 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius).
Gabriela Elyzabeth Deras entered the Harris Center with her four-year-old son but left baby Ethan Rosa Deras in the car under the Texas heat.
Several nurses tried to help the little one
When Gabriela Elyzabeth Deras left the health center, she found baby Ethan Rosa Deras unconscious inside the hot vehicle.
Desperate, the woman took the baby and ran inside the Harris Center, screaming for help from the medical staff.
The also desperate nurses tried all kinds of first aid for the baby but could not help him and then called the HFD.
However, when HFD paramedics arrived at the Harris Center, they could no longer help Ethan Rosa Deras and called the HPD.
The child’s death was determined to be a homicide by negligence
Medical examiners from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences (IFS) determined the baby’s death to be a homicide.
Agents from the HPD Homicide Division took over the investigation against Gabriela Elyzabeth Deras following the autopsy results.
It is not yet publicly known exactly how long baby Ethan Rosa Deras was inside the car under the heat.
After studying the case, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office decided to charge Gabriela Elyzabeth Deras with the baby’s death.
A Texas cell already holds the young Hispanic mother Gabriela Deras
Gabriela Elyzabeth Deras was detained by the HPD on Friday, August 2, 2024, and taken to the Harris County Jail.
At the time of writing this story, the judge has not determined when the woman’s hearing will be for the brutal crime resulting in the tragic death.
Chief Bashir, who coordinated the investigation for the HPD that day, said investigating such crimes was very painful for the police.
A total of 29 children died locked in family vehicles due to high temperatures in 2023. Four of those children died in Texas from the brutal heat.
