Gas stations in Florida are facing critical fuel shortages amid a massive evacuation following the arrival of Hurricane Milton.

In the last few hours, the storm has been upgraded to Category 5, the most dangerous hurricane on the scale.

Evacuation orders are in effect in at least seven counties on the state’s west coast, prompting thousands of people to flee by car.

This mass evacuation has saturated the roads to the north and south of Florida, according to Efe.

The GasBuddy app, which monitors fuel prices and supplies across the country, reported that more than 1,000 gas stations in the state have already run out of gasoline.

In Tampa Bay alone, about 100 stations were out of fuel Tuesday.

In response to this situation, Governor Ron DeSantis announced at a press conference that tanker trucks are being escorted by authorities along evacuation routes to supply service stations as quickly as possible.

Electric vehicle owners have also been urged to move their cars to higher ground because of the risk of fires from flooding.

In addition to the gasoline shortage, more than 1,500 flights have been canceled in the United States.

Flights have been cancelled for this Wednesday, according to Efe.

Meanwhile, Milton is approaching the west coast of Florida with maximum winds of 270 km/h (165 miles per hour), according to the latest bulletin from the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Authorities continue to ask residents to follow local orders and prepare. Landfall is expected Wednesday evening.
