Reflexology is a form of massage for the hands, ears and feet. Practitioners apply pressure to different areas that correspond to the body’s organs and various systems. Foot reflexology has been shown to alleviate anxiety and reduce pain. It’s especially helpful when used in conjunction with Western medicine. Ancient forms of reflexology come from Egypt and China but the modern practice grew out of Russian research in the early 1900s. Reflexology was introduced in the United States, in 1917, by Dr. William Fitzgerald who is often referred to as the father of reflexology.

So, other than the obvious fact that we care about your health and like to explore alternative therapies, why are we talking about this? Well, September 22 through the 28 is World Reflexology Week so we’re celebrating! Also, we learned recently that reflexology might be as effective as painkillers and we’re all about lowering the meds. Dr. Carol Samuel says, “It is likely that reflexology works in a similar manner to acupuncture by causing the brain to release chemicals that lessen pain signals.” Sounds good to us! If it sounds interesting to you too, check out these 13 reasons why foot reflexology can heal you.

1. Relaxation

When receiving a foot reflexology treatment, you’re essentially getting a foot massage. Who doesn’t find that relaxing?

2. Pain

A study done at the University of Portsmouth found that individuals receiving reflexology reported 40% less pain and were able to withstand their pain for 45% longer than those who were not treated. Amazing, right?

3. Circulation

Because reflexology improves blood circulation it can help with both diabetes management and a patient’s general wellbeing. It encourages homeostasis, a balanced state in the body, which is beneficial to all functions.

4. Cancer Treatment

Because of the therapeutic effects, foot acupressure may help to alleviate the pain, anxiety and even the nausea associated with cancer treatments and the disease itself.

5. Pregnancy

Reflexology can help calm morning sickness and has even been shown to help bring on contractions during labor.

6. PMS

A 1993 study found that ear, hand and foot reflexology helps to relieve PMS symptoms. Gotta love it when the scientific method shows something actually does what it’s supposed to do, right?

7. Anxiety

There isn’t a ton of scientific research on how effective reflexology is for treating anxiety but there is some evidence that it’s helpful for temporary relief. Because it lowers blood pressure and reduces stress, it makes sense that reflexology can lessen anxiety.

8. Insomnia

When your body is balanced and functioning better, you’re able to sleep more peacefully. Makes sense to us.

9. Energy

Increased circulation as well as self-care time can definitely improve overall energy levels.

10. Organ Function

Pressure applied on the left foot affects the organs on the left side of the body while pressure on the right foot affects the organs on the right (the liver, for example). Massaging these pressure points helps stimulate and clear the corresponding organs.

11. Detox

Thanks to better circulation, organ, and gland function reflexology is great for detoxification.

12. Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding moms can benefit from reflexology because it stimulates and clears breast ducts as well as the lymphatic and endocrine systems which can promote milk flow and relieve mastitis.

13. Migraine

Because migraines may be triggered by stress and anxiety as well as digestive issues (the jury is still out on what really causes these nightmares for some people), reflexology just makes sense as both a preventative agent and pain reliever during a severe headache.
