THEY SAY WHAT EL CHAPO WANTED

The request involved allowing phone calls and family visits at the maximum-security prison in Colorado.

According to CBS News, the judge stated that the Bureau of Prisons is now the sole entity responsible for the conditions of his confinement.

Currently, he is in solitary confinement at the Administrative Maximum Facility (ADX) in Florence, considered one of the most secure prisons in the world.

The judge’s decision came in response to a request filed by «El Chapo» on March 20th.

DOES HE DESERVE THE PUNISHMENT?

In his plea, the Mexican requested the restoration of the two 15-minute monthly phone calls he had with his 12-year-old twin daughters, as reported by Efe.

These calls had been canceled in May 2023.

Additionally, he requested permission for his daughters and his wife, Emma Coronel, to visit him.

However, the New York magistrate made it clear that the court where he was tried «does not have the authority to modify the conditions imposed by the Bureau of Prisons.»

He also pointed out that the calls and visits granted to him during the trial, which ended in 2019, were no longer in effect.

Guzmán Loera argued that the cancellation of the calls amounted to «unprecedented discrimination against him.»

He explained that these calls are his only means of contact with his daughters, who live in Mexico and cannot visit him due to a lack of visas.

Meanwhile, his wife, Emma Coronel, resides in California and was released from prison last year after serving two and a half years for drug trafficking and money laundering offenses.

The rejection of «El Chapo’s» requests underscores the severity of the conditions under which he serves his sentence in the maximum-security prison, where communications and visits are strictly controlled.

Since the beginning of the trial on November 5, 2018, in the United States, Joaquín Guzmán, originally from Badiraguato, Sinaloa, Mexico, faced charges of drug distribution, money laundering, and possession of firearms.

This resulted in a life sentence, plus 30 years for drug trafficking and an additional 20 years for money laundering.

However, in 2022, he filed a motion to overturn his sentence and request a new trial.

WORDS FROM CHAPO

Amidst this situation, he expressed his frustration from prison, stating: «In response, they have decided to punish me by not letting me speak with my daughters. Until today, they have not told me whether they will no longer allow me calls…».

These words suggest a mounting tension and difficulties in his prison situation.

The drug lord also denounced an act of discrimination against him. These statements reveal Guzmán’s ongoing struggle to maintain any kind of connection with his family while serving his sentence in isolation.

It’s worth noting that Joaquín Guzmán spends 23 hours a day confined to a cell and is only entitled to one hour of outdoor exposure daily, underscoring the rigorous conditions of his imprisonment.
