A 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook the southern coast of Japan on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Initially, the USGS reported a separate 6.9 magnitude earthquake just seconds before.
However, hours later, they corrected the information and confirmed a single 7.1 magnitude quake.
«The error was corrected. Only one event was recorded,» the USGS stated.
Details of the Epicenter and Impact of the Earthquake in Japan
The earthquake occurred at 4:42 pm (local time) off the coast of Kyushu, Japan.
The epicenter was located more than 12 miles northeast of Nichinan.
The earthquake had a depth of approximately 15.5 miles.
It was felt most strongly in Nichinan and nearby areas in the Miyazaki Prefecture.
The local meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning.
Residents were advised to stay out of the water and away from the coastline.
