The current numbers show a significant decrease compared to the 2020 elections, raising concerns among Democrats.

According to data provided by Republican political strategist John Couvillon, so far, 4.2 million Americans have cast their votes early.

Although this figure might seem substantial, it represents a 45% drop from early voting during the same period in 2020.

That year, the pandemic had driven higher use of early voting, according to The New York Post.

The decline in early voting is not widespread, as it varies by state and voting method.

In Virginia, where in-person early voting began in late September, there has been a 4% decrease compared to 2020 numbers.

Despite 459,000 people having already voted, the overall outlook is less encouraging.

What’s more concerning is the dramatic drop in requests for mail-in ballots, which have fallen by 58% in states that do not automatically send out ballots.

What Do the Early Voting Numbers Say?

Mail-in voting was key to Joe Biden’s victory in 2020, particularly in states like Pennsylvania, where mail-in ballots gave him a crucial edge over Donald Trump.

In key states like Georgia and North Carolina, requests for mail-in ballots have dropped more sharply, by 84% and 75%, respectively.

While part of this decline could be attributed to external factors like Hurricane Helene, the largest population centers in these states were not significantly impacted by the natural disaster.

Instead of opting for mail-in ballots, many voters are choosing to vote in-person at early voting centers, reducing the demand for mail-in voting.

How Are the Votes Going?

The decline in mail-in early voting is particularly noticeable in Midwestern states that traditionally lean Democratic.

In Wisconsin, mail-in ballot requests dropped by 59%, while in Pennsylvania and Michigan, they fell by 36% and 24%, respectively.

These figures are a cause for concern for the Democratic Party, which has relied heavily on mail-in voting in recent election cycles, according to The New York Post.

In Pennsylvania, Biden won in 2020 thanks to a 1.4 million mail-in vote lead, which was enough to offset Trump’s advantage in in-person Election Day voting.
