Former President Donald Trump announced on Sunday an executive order that could alter the course of TikTok in the United States.
The video platform, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, faces restrictions that have left millions of users without access.
He stated that his order «would extend the time period before the prohibitions of the law take effect» and «confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped keep TikTok from disappearing before my order.
«Americans deserve to see our exciting inauguration on Monday, as well as other events and conversations,» Trump wrote.

Since Saturday night, U.S. users of TikTok noticed they could no longer access or post on the app.
Google and Apple removed TikTok from their digital stores, complying with a federal law that requires blocking the app if ByteDance does not sell its operations in the country.

The measure arises from national security concerns due to ByteDance’s Chinese ties.
According to the law passed in April, ByteDance was to sever ties with U.S. operations by Sunday.
Trump’s Extension
In his post on Truth Social, Trump stated he could grant an additional 90 days to finalize a viable sale.
The former president also suggested that «the United States should have a 50% stake in a joint venture.» However, it was unclear if he referred to the government owning a local company.
«By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands, and allow it to continue growing,» Trump wrote.
«Without U.S. approval, there is no TikTok. With our approval, it’s worth hundreds of billions of dollars, maybe trillions.»
While investors have shown interest, ByteDance had previously stated that it had no intentions of selling, according to AP.
The law that led to this situation was passed with broad bipartisan support and was quickly signed by President Joe Biden.
ByteDance and TikTok tried to stop the measure, claiming First Amendment violations, but the Supreme Court upheld the law on Friday.
Meanwhile, millions of users in the United States face uncertainty about whether they will again enjoy the popular platform.
