The United States government will send up to 1,500 active-duty troops to the southern border in the coming days.

This decision, part of the executive orders issued by President Donald Trump at the start of his term, aims to intensify immigration policies.

Acting Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses will sign the deployment orders, though the specific units to participate have not yet been determined.

These troops will join the 2,500 National Guard and Reserve forces already stationed at the border.

Currently, no active-duty troops are working in the region. Their role will focus on logistical support, transportation, and the construction of barriers.

The use of troops for law enforcement activities is prohibited by the Posse Comitatus Act, but Trump has considered invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807.

The last time this act was used was in 1992, during the Los Angeles riots following the Rodney King case.

This deployment marks an initial step in Trump’s plan to expand the military’s role in immigration matters.

In his inaugural address, Donald Trump pledged to completely halt illegal entry into the country and repatriate millions of migrants.

Since the 1990s, the military has been continuously deployed to the border to address migration and transnational crime.

Trump previously ordered troop deployments in 2018 to address a migrant caravan, utilizing combat engineers, helicopters, and medical units.

While those troops did not engage in law enforcement activities, they supported border agents with transportation, barriers, and medical assistance.

It is unclear whether the Trump administration will use military bases to house detained migrants, as was done in previous administrations.
