President-elect Donald Trump has promised the largest deportation effort in U.S. history.
Yet, he has also proposed a pathway for immigrants studying or having completed their education in the country.
Trump stated that graduates from U.S. universities should automatically qualify for permanent residency.
“A green card to remain in this country,” the businessman declared during one of his campaigns.
Donald Trump’s Proposal Is an Opportunity Without Concrete Details
Narciso Cruz, an immigration attorney, told Heraldo USA that the proposal could represent a significant opportunity for immigrants.
However, he pointed out that no concrete plan or official document currently supports the idea.
“We need more details: who will qualify, what the requirements will be, and how this plan will be justified,” Cruz explained.
He also predicted resistance from Trump’s Republican base against granting permanent residency to certain graduates.
“This could create divisions within the Republican Party,” Cruz noted.
Nancy Stille, Cruz’s spokesperson, highlighted the logistical challenge posed by the number of green cards.
“Imagine how many students graduate each year—it would be an enormous amount,” she emphasized.

Stille agreed that implementing the proposal to grant residency to immigrant graduates would be complex and could take significant time to materialize.
Both experts recommend waiting for Trump’s administration to take concrete steps at the beginning of the next year.
The proposal’s potential impact on immigration policy remains uncertain as details and execution plans are yet to be clarified.
