  • Is Disney in trouble?
  • Fourteen countries have refused to show the movie, Lightyear.
  • What will happen to the animated feature film?

Lightyear is the new Pixar animated film that tells the origin story of Buzz, one of the protagonists of the 3D animation classic Toy Story. The film is now facing a controversial ban from theaters in 14 countries in the Middle East and Asia, due to a scene that includes a lesbian kiss.

Most people aren’t upset with Disney for including a same-sex kiss in one of their films. Still, the production company has made a somewhat risky decision by including the scene. However, they say it is innocent and the same-sex couple has been part of the plot of all the Toy Story films.

The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Jordan and Lebanon are some of the countries that have banned the film. Homosexuality is a crime in many of them. The decision also coincides with gay pride month.

The controversy arises specifically from a scene in which the explorer Alisha (voiced in the English version by actress Uzo Aduba) kisses her partner. The executives at Disney, the company that has owned Pixar since 2006, initially asked for that scene to be cut.

Hundreds of employees denounced the censorship in an open letter as part of a strategy that sought to get the company’s leadership to abandon their lukewarm posture towards inclusivity and raise their voices against what they consider a discriminatory law in Florida, where Disney owns six theme parks.

This measure, promoted by the Republicans, prohibits teaching younger students about gender issues and homosexuality. As a result, the controversial scene was restored to the film directed by Angus Maclane, who worked on Finding Dory.

Amid controversy over Florida’s LGBT rights legislation, Disney has decided to restore the kiss between two women in Lightyear, the upcoming Pixar film centered on the famous Toy Story protagonist. The move has been highly controversial, with some people celebrating the decision and others being very upset by it.

Producer Galyn Susman told Slash Film that the couple was always in the movies and the kiss was very important to the plot because it was essential to show Buzz Lightyear the happy family he is missing out on. She added that they are «really excited» to be able to show the relationship openly.

The decision to restore a kiss between two women in Lightyear, marks an important point in the history of Pixar. It is very likely that in the future we will be able to see a variety of queer characters in their projects. A movement has already started on social media.

“The fact that people focus more on the gay kiss in the Buzz Lightyear movie and not on the powerful message that Angelina Jolie conveyed in this scene from Maleficent where she gave a depiction of sexual abuse enrages me! But the “adults” are not ready for this.”
