The Department of Justice acknowledged that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has requested confidential IRS information on undocumented immigrants.
The revelation came during a hearing in a federal court in Washington, D.C., according to CNN.
Two organizations filed a lawsuit against the government to stop the IRS from sharing taxpayer data linked to ITIN numbers.
Immigrant Solidarity DuPage and the Centro de Trabajadores Unidos filed the complaint on March 7.
Plaintiffs Seek to Block DHS Access to Immigrant Data
The plaintiffs aim to prevent DHS from accessing the addresses of 700,000 immigrants identified for deportation.
They argue that this request violates the individual protections of undocumented taxpayers.
The Trump administration has been accused of pressuring the IRS to release this information.
Judge Dabney Friedrich declined to issue an emergency order to stop the potential exchange of data on immigrants.
She argued that there was no evidence the IRS was sharing information immediately, according to CNN.
A Justice Department lawyer stated that information would only be released if requests comply with the law.
