The man detained this Sunday for the alleged attempted assassination of former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump had been convicted more than 20 years ago for possession of a machine gun, according to local media reports.
The incident occurred at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, where the former president was playing golf.
The detainee, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, approached the course armed with an AK-47 rifle with a telescopic sight.
The Secret Service managed to detain him before he could fire. This is the second assassination attempt against Trump this summer.

Routh has been very active on social media and has lived in North Carolina and Hawaii.
He was convicted in 2002 for possession of a weapon of mass destruction, a fully automatic machine gun.
Additionally, he has a record for carrying a concealed weapon, possession of stolen property, and hit-and-run.
According to NBC, he has faced over 100 criminal charges in North Carolina.
