Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for president of the United States has campaigned on a promise of deporting 20 million immigrants.

He has stated that removing all undocumented migrants from the U.S. is one of his priorities if he returns to office.

It should be noted that the number of immigrants entering the country is likely much higher than the estimated of 11 million reported by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Given Trump’s plan for immigrants, the inevitable question arises: What is really needed to carry out such an undertaking?

According to New York Post, former officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) say it would be difficult but not impossible.

How would he orchestrate this ambitious initiative? An operation of such magnitude would require a massive expansion of ICE itself, whose infrastructure and resources would be overwhelmed by the task.

From recruiting and training a large number of agents to the acquisition of equipment and technologies necessary to carry out detentions and deportations, the logistical challenge would be monumental.

In addition, it would be crucial to collaborate with other government agencies.

The State Department would play a fundamental role in the process, especially regarding diplomacy and negotiations with the countries of origin of the immigrants to be deported.

Establishing bilateral agreements and efficient repatriation mechanisms could be essential to ensure the success of the operation.

But the financial dimension of this company is also worthy of consideration.

Congress would have to approve a significant increase in funding for ICE, as well as other agencies involved in the process, former officials told the New York Post.

When speaking about the challenges of this proposal, Tom Homan, who was acting director of ICE under Donald Trump, said they would focus on «criminals and national security threats» first.

However, the official made it clear that any irregular immigrant could be targeted. «If you’re in this country illegally… then we’ll remove you.»

On the other hand, Jon Feere, former ICE chief of staff during Donald Trump’s first term, said the plan could also have hiccups.

It won’t be easy

Trump’s plan for immigrants could face considerable obstacles if countries of origin are reluctant to accept them.

Feere told the New York Post that a possible way to address this problem would be implementing visa sanctions.

This would be pursuant to Section 243 (d) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

Another issue Feere raised are so-called «sanctuary cities.»

What about sanctuary cities?

These cities, which have chosen to limit their cooperation with federal immigration authorities, represent a significant obstacle to deportation operations.

According to Feere, ICE faces additional difficulties when it encounters resistance from these cities.

Although ICE would prefer that all states and cities cooperate fully with federal authorities on immigration matters, refusal would result in an increase in raids.

In other words, if sanctuary cities persist in their refusal to cooperate with ICE, the agency will likely be forced to intensify its efforts there.
