Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has ordered the immediate scheduling of special elections to fill the seats of two congressmen who will leave their positions to join Donald Trump’s administration in Washington.
According to an announcement made this Thursday on platform X (formerly Twitter), DeSantis instructed Secretary of State Cord Byrd to release the schedule for these special elections.
This measure aims to ensure that the vacant seats in the House of Representatives are filled as quickly as possible.
The urgency stems from the need to replace Congressmen Mike Waltz and Matt Gaetz, both representing Florida.
WHY ARE THERE VACANCIES IN FLORIDA AFTER THE ELECTIONS?
Gaetz, who has already submitted his resignation to the House, has been proposed as Attorney General, while Waltz has been appointed as National Security Advisor.
Both nominations will require Senate confirmation to officially join the new administration.

Additionally, Senator Marco Rubio was selected by Trump to serve as Secretary of State, a position that also requires Senate approval.
Unlike representatives, Rubio’s replacement will be directly appointed by DeSantis without the need for special elections.
DeSantis’s rush to fill these seats has drawn attention, as Florida’s electoral process is typically lengthy.
For instance, the 2021 special election to replace Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings took nine months following his death.
This time, however, the urgency is attributed to the narrow Republican majority in the House of Representatives, which secured 218 seats in the recent November 5 elections.
The two districts in question, predominantly Republican, are strategically important for maintaining control of the House and ensuring the party’s effectiveness in the upcoming session, according to Efe.
