- Deportations in the US Treated as a Business
- Migrant Transfers to El Salvador
- Criticism over Human Rights Violations
The director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Todd Lyons, expressed his desire for deportations in the country to be handled “like Amazon for human beings.”
At a Border Security conference in Phoenix, Arizona, Lyons stated that the expulsion of migrants should be treated “like a business,” according to AZMirror.
These remarks come at a time when the Donald Trump administration, which has promised one of the largest deportation campaigns in US history, is under scrutiny for detaining migrants without criminal records or with legal status.
As part of harsher measures, Trump has sent over 200 migrants, mostly Venezuelans with no criminal history, to a mega-prison in El Salvador, according to a CBS report.
Use of the Alien Enemies Act and International Controversy over Deportations in the US
The U.S. government has invoked a 17th-century law, the Alien Enemies Act, to justify these expulsions. Several human rights organizations have filed lawsuits in court to challenge the use of this legislation.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court lifted an order from a federal court that had blocked the deportations of Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador.
However, it was specified that the detainees have the right to be notified and to challenge their deportation within a “reasonable time.”
The situation has sparked significant controversy both nationally and internationally, as many argue that the measures taken violate the human rights of migrants.
Human rights groups argue that the speed at which these deportations are taking place, without fair evaluation of each case, may result in the removal of individuals who pose no threat to national security.
Additionally, the implementation of the Alien Enemies Act, used by the U.S. government, has been seen by many as a repressive tool that could set a dangerous precedent.
