Math teacher Cristina Irimie was celebrating her birthday with her students on the day she was tragically shot and killed at Apalachee High School, according to a family friend.

Corneliu Caprar, a close friend of Irimie and her husband, who are part of the same Romanian church community, told CNN that Irimie’s birthday was on August 24.

“She decided to bake a cake and bring pizza to her class on the day of her death so she could celebrate her birthday with her kids,” Caprar shared.

Irimie was a dedicated teacher who treated her students as if they were her own children.

“Cristina and her husband were unable to have biological children of their own, so she chose to love her students as if they were hers,” said Caprar.

Irimie also loved to dance with her husband as she was a traditional Romanian folk dancer. According to Caprar, Irimie’s husband is now «at the lowest point of his life and can’t understand why this happened to his beloved.»

“Last night, he had to call her brother, who still lives in Romania, and tell him that his sister had died,” Caprar added.

Now, her brother is processing the death of Irimie and how to break the news to their mother, who just underwent emergency surgery, that her daughter was killed in a school shooting.

«She Was So Much Fun»

“Cristina was someone who made you feel welcome and important, and she was so much fun. She was full of life,” Caprar said.

“We are all in shock. She was smart, vibrant, generous, and beautiful, and the fact that one of her own took her life is the most shocking part of all.” Caprar stated.

Throughout her career, Cristina Irimie had earned the love and respect of her students due to her teaching style and the empathy she showed them.

Isaac Sanguma, one of her students, told CBS Mornings that Irimie was not only an excellent teacher but also someone who always made her students feel valued.

“She never made me feel stupid,” Sanguma recalled, highlighting how Cristina Irimie used humor and patience to encourage students who struggled with math.

“You could get a question wrong on the board, and she wouldn’t make you feel bad. She’d make you feel welcome.”

Sadly, after her tragic death, her husband has been left devastated.

Caprar, who has been supporting him during this difficult time, said that her husband is now at the “lowest point of his life.”
