According to Telemundo 44, coyotes use artificial intelligence to scam immigrants.
How is this done? They send photo and video montages showing fake kidnappings of their relatives and demand ransom.
In these images, the ‘victims’ are sitting or kneeling with knives near their necks.
To make matters worse, the coyotes have them holding signs with the message like: «They are going to kill me, help me.»
Their relatives disappeared in the desert
It is reported that the coyotes use artificial intelligence to deceive people by taking advantage of their desperation.
«Most of them are families whose relatives disappeared in the desert, those who sought to cross the U.S. border and never reached their destination.»
According to El Universo, Oscar Andrade, director of the Capellanes del Desierto Humanitarian Group, described what often happens in cases like these.
More and more families are paying ransom to coyotes to try to save their relatives’ lives.
How realistic are the videos?
At first glance, it might seem very difficult for someone to fall for a fake kidnapping video, but the scammers are clever at using AI.
«Now what they are doing is sending videos where the person’s face has movement,» said Oscar Andrade.
However, there is a small detail to look out for. These videos don’t have sound and the kidnapped person never speaks.
Until just a few weeks ago, nine reports of extortion had been received at the Arizona border.
Coyotes ask for certain information from immigrants
According to Telemundo 44, coyotes ask for certain information from immigrants, such as their name, nationality and their families’ contacts.
After that, they only need a photo to begin the scam, all thanks to artificial intelligence.
Some of the messages they send to relatives say that they are going to kill their family member and cut off their head.
«They called us and claimed they had my brother,» said a young woman named Yozabeth who was a victim of one of these scams.
Coyotes prey on fear
According to El Universo, there is something that can be done to avoid falling for the these scams.
Computer security experts recommend family members thoroughly review the content and then contact the authorities.
Keep in mind that nowadays, this kind of material can be created with a computer or a cell phone.
Unfortunately, people who fall for this scam are overcome with terror and agree to pay what is asked of them.
