Marcee knew something was terribly wrong, even if she couldn’t put it into words.
Minutes later, while she waited for a response, tragedy struck the school.
“The counselor said, ‘Well, I wanted to let you know that this morning, one of Colt’s teachers emailed me, saying that Colt had been making references to school shootings,’” Marcee Gray recalled.
“I told them it was an extreme emergency, and they needed to go find Colt immediately to see how he was,” Marcee later explained in a text message to her sister. “I don’t understand why it took so long.”
A shooting had erupted in the school hallways. Chaos gripped the staff and students.

In an interview with ABC News, she shared her anguish and recounted her conversation with a school counselor.
“I would tell him that I love him, that Jesus and I will love him forever,” she said. “And I would tell him, ‘It’s not your fault.’ It’s not his fault.”
