  • Here are the details.

The dream of a better life in the United States turned into a nightmare for the family of Stephanie López Ramírez, a 17-year-old Colombian girl whose body was found dead on October 1st in an apartment in Humboldt Park, Chicago.

According to the coroner’s report, the teenager was shot in the left arm, and the bullet hit her chest, causing her death at the scene.

Chicago authorities are investigating the case as a homicide, and the family now faces the difficult challenge of repatriating her body to Colombia.

The tragedy began when Chicago police responded to a call on the 700 block of North Avers Avenue, where they found Stephanie’s body.

Neighbors described the impact of the police operation. «Between 12 and 1, the police arrived like crazy, and it lasted until about 4:55 in the afternoon. Around 5, they removed the girl’s body,» José Leal, a neighbor, told Univision.

So far, police have identified a person of interest, a friend of the victim whose fingerprints were found at the crime scene, according to the ballistic report.

Although no formal charges have been filed yet, Stephanie López Ramírez’s mother, Deisy Ramírez, revealed that the suspect had admitted responsibility but claimed the shooting was accidental. However, the family fears that the alleged perpetrator may be released.

The pain for Stephanie’s mother is not only the loss of her daughter but also the inability to give her a final farewell in Colombia.

In a statement to Noticias RCN, she expressed her anguish: «I want to see my daughter one last time, I want to see my daughter whole one last time. As a mother, I want to see my daughter.»

However, the family lacks the financial means to repatriate her body.

Due to this difficult situation, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover funeral costs and Stephanie’s return to Colombia. You can access it with this link.

«A sweet girl who brought so much love and light to this world»

Alicia Soto, a friend of the young woman’s father, organized the fundraiser and described the teenager as «a sweet girl who brought so much love and light to this world.»

Stephanie’s father, Armando López, had recently arrived in the United States seeking a better life for his family, but now he faces the heartbreaking task of bringing his daughter back home.

This case remains under investigation, and authorities are expected to provide more details in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Stephanie López Ramírez’s family is fighting not only for justice but also for the chance to say goodbye to their daughter in their homeland.
