Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico, firmly denied on Thursday that she ever agreed to close the border during her call with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
This assertion comes after Trump claimed on Wednesday that the Mexican government had guaranteed such an action.
«Everyone has their own way of communicating, but I can assure you, I give you certainty, that never, and we would never even consider it, did we propose closing the border in the north of Mexico or the south of the United States.»
«That was never our proposal,» Sheinbaum stated during her daily press conference.

Sheinbaum addressed the conflicting narratives about her conversation with Trump, who claimed on Truth Social that Sheinbaum had:
«Agreed to stop migration through Mexico and into the U.S., effectively closing the border.»

Meanwhile, Sheinbaum reiterated on X (formerly Twitter) that Mexico’s stance does not involve closing borders.
The Mexican president emphasized that Trump had raised concerns about migration at the border and the fentanyl crisis, which he linked to potential tariffs.
What Happened Between Sheinbaum and Trump?
Claudia Sheinbaum clarified that her focus was on presenting a migration strategy already in place and aimed at strengthening it further.
«What I proposed to President Trump is the migration strategy that has been in place for months, which we have reinforced since January 2024.»
«In response to an increase in migration, particularly during the last months of 2023, this comprehensive strategy is being strengthened,» Sheinbaum explained.
She also assured that «there will be no trade war» with the U.S., despite Trump’s statements about imposing tariffs.
What Did Trump Say About Tariffs?
Despite Claudia Sheinbaum’s assurances, Trump announced on Monday that one of his first executive orders would impose a 25% tariff on «all products» from Mexico and Canada.
The tariffs would remain until what he described as «the invasion» of illegal migrants and drugs, particularly fentanyl, stops.
«There won’t be a potential trade war. It was a very amicable conversation. We agreed that the relationship would be very positive,» Sheinbaum insisted during her morning briefing.
Her comments came a day after her phone call with Trump to discuss migration and narcotics trafficking.
Progress in Bilateral Talks
Claudia Sheinbaum’s statements contrast with a letter she sent to Trump on Tuesday. In it, she warned that «one tariff will lead to another in response» and rejected his «threats.»
«We didn’t specifically discuss tariffs, but rather the issues he brought up as areas of interest. The conversation didn’t progress as a threat anymore,» she asserted.
She reiterated that migrant caravans are no longer reaching the U.S. border.
Mexico’s government has implemented a plan that includes providing jobs for those who stay, shelters, voluntary returns, and stopping caravans before they move north.
«I Presented All of This to President Trump»
«In our conversation with President Trump, I explained the comprehensive strategy Mexico has implemented to address migration while respecting human rights. This approach addresses migrants and caravans before they reach the northern border.»

«I explained all this to President Trump and told him: the caravan mentioned in his publication will not reach the northern border because we have a strategy to address it within our country. He evidently acknowledged this effort,» Sheinbaum stated.
She also mentioned that Trump recognized Mexico’s anti-narcotics efforts, including the campaign initiated by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), titled Fentanil Mata («Fentanyl Kills»).
«He talked about the fentanyl crisis in the U.S. and asked if Mexico faces a consumption problem. I told him it is very minimal and explained that Mexican families take care of each other. We are very united as families and protect one another,» Sheinbaum concluded.
