  • Gandarilla de los Santos, 19, is accused of having shot and killed his 17-year-old girlfriend.
  • Detaining the boy required the cooperation of various police corporations in Mexico and the United States.

Alexander Gandarilla de los

Santos was arrested for the shooting homicide of his girlfriend in North Carolina last July.

Gandarilla de los Santos, 19, was greeted by Border Patrol agents in San Diego, California, after staying in hiding for months in Tijuana, Mexico.

The Homicide Division of the Wake County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO, for its acronym in English) had an arrest warrant against Gandarilla de los Santos and considered him «armed and dangerous.»

Gandarilla de los Santos, according to the information provided by the WCSO, killed his girlfriend of 17 years in the house of his family of several bullets. Authorities did not reveal the girl’s name.

The chronicle below is based on information provided by both the Border Patrol in California and the WCSO in North Carolina.

At 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2020, the WCSO emergency number received a call from a person asking for urgent help because a girl was injured by several bullets.

Due to the seriousness of the report, several agents responded to the emergency call at the house marked with 3000 Copperhead Road, in the rural community of Apex, in the southwest of the metropolitan area of Raleigh, North Carolina.

The house where the events occurred is in a wooded area away from the city, interspersed with rural roads of ranchers and loggers.

WCSO Sheriff Gerald Baker detailed in an impromptu news conference outside the crime scene that the victim had been a girl who lived in the home with her family.

According to Baker, the minor’s parents heard noises, a slight commotion in the middle of the night and that is why they woke up.

The patriarch of the family left his room to check what was happening in the house and found his daughter lying on the floor of the living room wounded by several gunshots.

The call from the father was the one that alerted the authorities and they ordered that the girl be transferred to WakeMed where, shortly after arriving at the emergency room, she died of her injuries.

After the homicide, the fugitive Gandarilla de los Santos managed to evade the authorities who were looking for him on the rural roads of North Carolina in a frenzy. (Photo: Wake County Sheriff’s Office)

In the first investigations, with interviews with the family, the agents of the WCSO Homicide Division determined that the alleged murderer was the girl’s boyfriend, whom they identified as Alexander Gandarilla de los Santos.

Some residents of the house where the events took place revealed to the authorities that, shortly before the patrols arrived, they had seen a pickup truck leave the house at full speed, losing itself on the rural roads.

The home in which the tragedy occurred is not easily accessible as it is a mile, hidden in the woods, off State Highway I heading to Harris County Lake Park.

A frantic search was unleashed on rural roads to find the alleged perpetrator by WCSO agents with the support of the Cary Police Department (CPD, for its acronym in English).

The agents of the two corporations even released the sniffer dogs into the woods to try to find the man in a search that lasted for hours.

However, the efforts to arrest the alleged perpetrator were in vain and the WCSO and CPD agents surprised them by daylight without being able to arrest him.

On Tuesday, July 21, 2020, five days after the crime, the WCSO Homicide Division called a press conference in which they revealed the name of Alexander Gandarilla de los Santos as the alleged murderer.

WCSO detectives focused on asking the Hispanic community, even with messages in Spanish, to help them catch the murderer of his girlfriend in a crime that shook that peaceful area of North Carolina.

Despite the authorities’ efforts to find the fugitive Alexander Gandarilla de los Santos, the man managed to evade justice and they were unable to capture him.

A stroke of luck turned the tide of the investigation for WCSO Homicide Division officers thanks to an unusual phone call from California.

Agents of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI, for its acronym in English) in San Diego called the WCSO to inform them that the boy they were looking for was hiding in a house in the Colonia Granjas Familiares Unidad in Tijuana, Mexico.

However, they were unable to arrest him and requested the support of the police from the State Security and Investigations Guard (GESI) of the Mexican state of Baja California to track down Gandarilla de los Santos.

Alexander Gandarilla de los Santos is a citizen of the United States, so his presence in Mexico was accredited by the National Institute of Migration (INM) and was decreed as irregular since he was required for a crime.

The HSI agents gave clues and guidance to their Mexican colleagues from the GESI and the INM and both corporations, after months of searching for him, they finally arrested Alexander Gandarilla de los Santos when he was walking quietly along Mulegé Street in Tijuana.

Alexander Gandarilla de los Santos was turned over to Border Patrol agents in San Diego, California, on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, and informed that he had been arrested for the murder of his girlfriend.

Gandarilla de los Santos, at the time of writing this chronicle, is already in prison Wake County in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he will face his murder trial.

The only mystery that still remains to be solved is the motive for the crime because so far Alexander Gandarilla de los Santos has not declared why he broke in in the middle of the night to shoot his 17-year-old girlfriend, as the authorities say.
