U.S. prosecutors have reported that an undocumented Venezuelan citizen was involved in a Chicago sex trafficking ring.
The criminal operation forced immigrant women into prostitution in Chicago and its suburbs, according to authorities.
The Chicago police rescued two Venezuelan women aged 20 and 22. They were taken to a West Side hospital for medical attention.
The victims and a third woman said that they arrived in the U.S. in October. They were assisted by a man named Victor, who forced them into prostitution to pay off a «debt.»
Chicago sex trafficking network busted
The women managed to escape from Victor at the end of last year, taking refuge in a hotel in Elgin, where they encountered another man named Yession.
Yession, promising protection against Victor, lured them into his own sex trafficking network, according to CWB Chicago.
On Friday, Yession and three armed men abducted the women at the Elgin hotel, accusing them of owing money and forcing them into separate cars.
They ended up in a house on West Gladys, in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood. They were held captive by Wilson Albeiro Vásquez Román, a 24-year-old undocumented Venezuelan.
Authorities intensify efforts to stop human trafficking
Vásquez Román and other men threatened to send the women out of state where they would continue being forced into prostitution.
Authorities are intensifying efforts to dismantle these criminal networks and bring justice to the victims.
The case is still developing, with the police searching for more individuals who may be involved and offering support to the victims, according to by CWB Chicago.
Human rights organizations are demanding stronger measures to prevent and eradicate human trafficking.
Debate on immigration and organized crime
Vasquez Roman’s arrest opens a debate about immigration and its connections to criminal networks.
The victims now face the challenge of rebuilding their lives with the help of support and protection services.
The case has highlighted the complexity and global reach of the sex trafficking problem.
Prosecutors have promised to rigorously pursue all involved in this exploitation network.
