A tragic incident darkened the day for the US police on Monday, as an officer was found dead from a gunshot wound near Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Police Chief Johnny Jennings described the day as particularly sad for his department during a press conference, where he provided details on the incident.

It appears the officer found dead may have taken his own life, as the chief emphasized the importance of mental health.

Chief Jennings extended condolences to the officer’s family and requested respect for the difficult time they are going through, Yahoo reported.

Chief Jennings made a clear statement: «A very sad day for our department, but I highlight the importance of what we talk about every day.»

He continued: «When it comes to mental health, we need to understand that our officers see things daily that normal people do not,» he stated.

The chief requested that the press not publish images of the scene where the officer was found.

It was reported that an officer was on his ‘break’ on Steele Creek Road when his emergency button was activated.

The police discovered the officer at the Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, according to radio communication information.

This tragedy marks the second in a couple of months for the Charlotte police department.

Notably, in April, four officers were killed and another four injured in a shooting.

In that case, the massacre suspect, Terry Clark Hughes Jr., also died, but investigations continue.
