The shooting of Carlos Carrizales against José Ismael González Fernández is yet another gun related crime in the United States. The non-profit organization Gun Violence Archive reports that so far this year 36,382 people have already been shot dead.

As of Sunday, October 24, 2o21, of those people who have been shot dead in the United States, a total of 16,780 were murdered and 19,602 committed suicide, while 33,472 were injured. In Texas people can now freely carry guns

Texas woke up on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 with a new law about carrying weapons. Thanks to a law approved by the State Congress, it is legal to carry a firearm, rifle or pistol, in sight and without having received training. This is despite the repeated deadly shootings as in the case of Carlos Carrizales and José Ismael González Fernández.

Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, signed the new law as he called a «constitutional right» to be able to carry weapons such as rifles, shotguns and pistols of any caliber in practically any public place. By putting his signature on the new law, the governor said he signed the «documents that instill freedom in the Lone Star State.»

House Bill 1927, the new gun law in Texas, was voted on in the State Congress in May 2021 and was approved with 86 in favor and 62 against it, with 2 abstentions. Governor Abbot signed the law into effect, which was his proposal, last June.

However, some law enforcement agencies in Texas have publicly and privately criticized the decision to pass a law that according to many police officers exposes them, and other citizens, to the danger of firearms in the hands of people who don’t know how to handle them properly.

It is no longer necessary to have training in handling weapons

The only people who cannot carry a gun in Texas in public places are those with a criminal record. However, misdemeanors such as driving under the influence (DWI) do not affect the possession and carrying of firearms.

A detailed reading of the new gun law in Texas reveals that it will no longer even be necessary for a person to have their fingerprints taken when purchasing a pistol or rifle. Only those who are on the list of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will not be able to buy or carry a weapon.

The increase in crime in Texas during the pandemic

It is no longer mandatory for a person to take a gun handling course before purchasing a firearm. Now it is only recommended to take a free online course offered by the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS).

James McLaughlin, Director of the Texas Police Chiefs Association, believes that the new weapons law was approved after the increase in crimes in the state, such as home robbery or vehicle theft, which occurred throughout the past year amid the coronavirus pandemic. However, he clarifies that many civilians are prepared to use weapons.
