Canada is prepared to impose retaliatory tariffs on $155 billion worth of US imports if President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to impose levies on Canadian products.
The announcement was made on Monday by Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly.
Speaking to the media, Joly stated that Canada remains committed to diplomacy despite Trump’s latest remarks.
However, she made it clear that Canada is fully prepared for a trade war if the former president moves forward with his threats.

These statements come in response to Trump’s declaration that neither Canada nor Mexico has any «room to negotiate» and that starting Tuesday, a 25% tariff will be imposed on all exports from both countries to the US.
“If President Trump goes ahead with tariffs on Canadian goods, we are ready with countermeasures worth $155 billion.”

“The first phase of $30 billion in tariffs is already set to go into effect.”
This stance has fueled tensions within the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade partnership.
Joly also revealed that Canada has not yet received any formal notification from Washington about the tariffs’ implementation.
The only indication comes directly from Trump’s public remarks, leaving Canadian authorities on high alert.
With this warning, Canada signals its readiness to defend its economic interests against any measures deemed unfair.
If Trump’s tariff policy takes effect, tensions between both countries could escalate significantly, according to EFE.
