Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on the automotive sector a “direct attack.”
In response, he vowed that the country would act in unity to counter the potential economic impact.
Carney noted that while these tariffs will harm the Canadian economy, the government will explore non-tariff measures in addition to imposing its own retaliatory tariffs.
The prime minister stated that Canada “has other options” to confront Trump’s protectionist policies.

“We will defend our workers, we will defend our companies, we will defend our country,” he said.
“And we will do it united. The United States is divided, and that is weakening,” added the Canadian leader.

“I will gather the cabinet tomorrow to discuss our options,” said Carney, noting that he had not yet received Trump’s signed decree and therefore couldn’t assess the full impact of the tariffs.
Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford also issued a forceful response, declaring that his aim is to inflict “maximum pain” on the United States until President Trump withdraws the tariffs.
Ontario is home to Canada’s major automobile assembly plants, making it a key region affected by the move.
Ford recalled that he previously increased the price of electricity sold from his province to the U.S. and even considered an energy embargo against the neighboring country.
In this regard, he stated Canada has two options:
“We can duck our heads as a country and let Trump run us over until he gets what he wants, or we feel a little pain and fight like never before.”
Despite having expressed admiration for Trump in the past, Ford criticized the U.S. president’s decision.
He insisted that Trump’s tariff policies will not lower prices for U.S. consumers, according to EFE.
Instead, they could have the opposite effect and harm businesses and workers on both sides of the border.
The trade conflict between the two countries continues to escalate, and Canada’s response could mark a turning point in bilateral relations.
