Canada has already put a plan in motion for trade reprisals against the United States if Donald Trump follows through on his threat to impose tariffs on Canadian exports.
Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, confirmed on Friday that the warnings from the president-elect are «clear and present.»
Joly stated that Trump plans to impose the tariffs immediately after taking office on January 20.
«The president (elect) Trump has made it clear that tariffs will be one of his first actions,» Joly noted.
Canada warns of consequences and prepares for Donald Trump’s tariff threat

The Canadian government is working to convince Trump’s team that there will be consequences.
However, Joly made it clear that they are also ready to act if the threat becomes a reality.
«We will be prepared to respond, but we need to take this as a very serious threat,» she stated.
The Canada minister pointed out that Donald Trump returns to the White House «with more experience and a very loyal team.»
«He now understands how Washington works and also the dynamics of geopolitics,» she added.

Joly emphasized that Canada must show that there will be real consequences for the United States if tariffs are imposed.
«It’s crucial to show the Americans that these actions will have a cost,» she concluded.
