Hundreds of volunteers will knock on Hispanic voters’ doors this holiday weekend in Georgia.

This is part of an ambitious campaign to mobilize nearly a quarter of a million eligible Latino voters for the upcoming November 5 election in this key state.

The effort is led by Mijente PAC, the political arm of the largest progressive political organization in the country, alongside civic groups in Georgia.

Georgia is one of seven states that will determine the winner of the U.S. Presidency.

The goal is to reach a total of 210,000 Hispanic households across Georgia to encourage the community to vote.

And to remind them that the decision they make will have “an impact on our families’ lives for generations,” said Adelina Nichols, Executive Director of GLAHR Action Network (GAN) and a member of Mijente PAC.

“Part of the work with Mijente PAC is not only knocking on doors and talking to our people but also making calls and sending texts to remind them when they can start voting,” Nichols told EFE.

It is estimated that around 400,000 Latino residents in Georgia are registered to vote.

Why is the Latino Vote Important in the U.S.?

Latinos are considered a key group of voters, being part of a minority coalition that, in past elections, gave Democrats their first victory in Georgia since 1992 when Bill Clinton won the state.

In tight elections like the upcoming November 5 election in the United States, the Latino community can make a difference in key states.

For instance, in Georgia, where Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) are virtually tied.

According to the portal FiveThirtyEight, which averages poll results, the Republican leads the Democrat in Georgia by just one percentage point.

Encouraging The Latino Population to Exercise Their Right to Vote

“We know many people in our community cannot vote, but they have children who can or have uncles or godfathers who are already citizens.»

«So, we are creating this urgency to remind others to vote,” Nichols explained.

In this sense, Tania Unzueta, Mijente’s National Policy Director, warned that Georgia has always been a state of resistance.

From the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement to current struggles against police violence, for immigrant rights, and the right to vote.

What Did the Activists Say About This?

Unzueta emphasized that Latino voters are part of a “broad, powerful multiracial coalition of communities and organizations.”

One that has come together to fight for justice and equality for future generations.

“Latino voters are crucial to that transformation, and we are here to build the infrastructure that will make our voices impossible to ignore in 2024 and beyond,” she added.
