In a notable political turn, Nayib Bukele won reelection as president of El Salvador, an achievement the United States government has recognized.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted the importance of respecting human rights and fair trial guarantees in his congratulatory message.
«I congratulate Nayib Bukele on his electoral victory as President of El Salvador,» he wrote in statement, marking a milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries.
This political event is significant not only for Bukele’s reelection but also for the support and emphasis on fundamental principles advocated by the U.S. government.

«The United States commends the work of electoral observers and looks forward to working with President-elect Bukele,» added Blinken.
Blinken stated that U.S. priorities in their relationship with El Salvador would be «good governance, inclusive economic prosperity, fair trial guarantees, and human rights.»
The United States, he said, values the «strong relationship» maintained with the people of El Salvador, «forged over 160 years on shared values, regional ties, and family connections.»
«Events in El Salvador have a direct impact on U.S. interests at home and abroad,» he added.
Bukele declared victory before the election results were in
«Only by working together can we achieve our full potential and overcome the greatest obstacles in our hemisphere and globally,» Blinken asserted.
On Sunday night, Bukele proclaimed victory before all of the votes were counted.
With 70.25% of the ballots processed, according to preliminary analysis by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), he already has 1,662,313 votes.
Bukele is trailed by the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front candidate (FMLN, left) with 139,025 votes.
Final results will take days
The National Republican Alliance (Arena, right) candidate has 122,926 votes.
The election results in El Salvador must be ratified in a final count with physical ballots, and this process takes several days.
If the numbers are confirmed, Bukele would become the first reelected president of El Salvador.
His majority in Congress would allow him to continue his war against gangs through a state of exception, implemented since March 2022.
