The Erie County District Attorney’s Office in upstate New York identified the gunman who killed 10 people in a shooting at a Buffalo supermarket as Payton Gendron, an 18-year-old who had previously been defined as a white supremacist. He was arrested and is being held without bail on charges of first-degree murder, for which he will appear before a judge for the first time on the morning of Tuesday, May 17.

The crime could put him in jail for the rest of his life, since there is no death penalty in the state of New York, according to the EFE news agency. The prosecutor has confirmed that they consider the murders to be «racially motivated» according to the theory advanced by FBI special agent Steven Belanger, who had said that his office is investigating the incident «as a hate crime and a case of violent extremism for racial reasons.»

Gendron apparently traveled to Buffalo to target the African American community

Payton Gendron, from Conkin, NY, drove for several hours to reach Buffalo. He apparently chose that neighborhood of the city because it is a predominantly Black community. Among his thirteen victims (10 dead plus three wounded), 11 of them were Black, according to EFE.

Following the shooting, which included the killing of a security officer at the Tops Friendly Market supermarket in Buffalo, Payton Gendron voluntarily surrendered to police. The New York Times, quoted by EFE, indicated that the defendant declared himself «not guilty» at his initial arraignment and accepted a court-appointed lawyer after asserting that he could not afford to hire one.

According to the AP, Gendron was wearing military gear and livestreaming on Twitch through a camera that he had on his helmet as he rampaged through the supermarket. Later, he appeared before a judge in a paper medical gown and was indicted on various counts of murder.

Payton Gendron wore a bulletproof vest and military-style clothing during the attack on mostly Black shoppers and employees at Tops Friendly Market. For at least two minutes, he livestreamed the horrifying events on Twitch before the service cut his broadcast short. However, the website Kaotic has published the chilling video.

A short video apparently from Peyton Gendron’s Twitch account, posted on social media, showed him arriving at the supermarket in his car, the AP reported. The assailant shot four people outside the establishment, three of whom died, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said. Inside the store, a security guard, who was a retired Buffalo police officer, fired several shots, but a bullet that hit the attacker’s bulletproof vest had no effect, Gramaglia added.

The shooter then killed the guard and walked through the store firing at other victims. At one point in the video, you can see how the gunman spared the life of a white man lying on the ground to whom he said, «Sorry,» and then continued with the killing. «This is the worst nightmare that any community can face, and right now we are hurt and angry,» Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said at a news conference cited by AP. «The depth of pain that families are feeling and that all of us are feeling right now cannot even be explained.»

“This was pure evil”

The AP said police then entered the store and confronted the assailant near the entrance. «At that time, the subject was pointing the gun at his neck,» Gramalglia said. Two officers told him to release it, the commissioner added. Twitch later said in a statement that it cut off Gendron’s stream «less than two minutes after his act of violence began.»

At a previous news conference, Erie County Sheriff John Garcia had bluntly described the attack as a hate crime. “This was pure evil. This was a racially motivated hate crime perpetrated by someone outside of our community, outside of the City of Good Neighbors… who came into our community and tried to inflict that evil on us,” he said.

Witnesses Braedyn Kephart and Shane Hill, both in their 20s, were arriving in the parking lot as the shooter was leaving. They described the subject as a white male in his 20s or early 20s who was wearing camouflage and carrying a black helmet, as well as what appeared to be a rifle.

“He was standing there with the gun pointed at his chin. We were puzzled and said what the hell is going on? Why is this guy pointing a gun at his face?” Kephart stated. Then he got down on one knee, «He took off his helmet, dropped the gun and was tackled to the ground by police,» he added. For its part, Tops Friendly markets said in a statement quoted by AP: “We are shocked and deeply saddened by this unjustified act of violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.»

The rifle was purchased legally

Details of the massacre

According to the AP report, authorities said the rifle Payton Gendron used in the tragic supermarket shooting was purchased legally, but the magazines he placed in the gun were not allowed for sale in New York.

Later, President Joe Biden said in a statement that he was praying for the victims and their families. «We still need to learn more about the motivation for [the] shooting as law enforcement does its work, but we don’t need anything else to state a clear moral truth: A racially motivated hate crime is abhorrent to the very fabric of this nation,» he declared. «Any act of domestic terrorism, including an act perpetrated in the name of a repugnant white nationalist ideology, is antithetical to everything we stand for in America.»
