A coalition of activists in New York condemned a bill being debated in the Senate this Friday.
Which, if passed, would allow immigration services to detain undocumented immigrants who have been arrested or accused of non-violent crimes without proving their guilt.
The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), representing over 200 groups that advocate for immigrant rights, stated today in a press release that the rule would particularly affect minors under 18.
Including unaccompanied children who benefit from DACA, a program that grants legal status to migrants brought to the U.S. as minors and which Donald Trump has promised to eliminate.

The legislation also expands the ability of state attorneys general to request injunctions against the federal government.
This is for immigration policy decisions, «which will create chaos in federal courts,» according to the organization.

«The Senate’s decision to move forward (with the legislation) is a direct attack on immigrant communities».
«And will result in many more New York migrants being criminalized and detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE),» stated Murad Awawdeh, president and CEO of the coalition.
«An Attack on Immigrant Communities»
Awawdeh called on New York City to «reject this harmful and punitive measure» in migrant communities.
The bill, named Laken Riley, after a university student murdered in Georgia in 2024 by Venezuelan José Ibarra, was proposed by the Republican Party.
It also underwent a key vote today to advance the measure’s approval, which is scheduled for next Monday.
In addition to the Republicans, ten Democratic senators voted today in favor of moving forward with the approval of the rule.
