President Joe Biden has embarked on his first presidential visit to sub-Saharan Africa, arriving in Angola on Monday.

During this three-day trip, he aims to counter China’s growing influence on the continent, focusing on the Lobito Corridor railway project, which connects Zambia, Congo, and Angola.

This ambitious project seeks to bolster U.S. presence in a region rich in critical minerals essential for batteries and clean technologies.

Biden made a brief stop in Cape Verde, where he met with Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva before heading to Angola.

Biden’s agenda includes a meeting with Angolan President João Lourenço, a visit to the National Museum of Slavery, and a tour of the port city of Lobito to observe progress on the railway project.

The president had announced his intention to visit Africa in 2023 following a summit with African leaders in Washington in 2022.

However, Hurricane Milton delayed his arrival until now, during the final days of his presidency, according to AP.

It’s worth noting that Donald Trump will assume office on January 20.

Recent photographs of President Joe Biden during this trip have drawn attention to visible marks on his cheeks, attributed to his use of a CPAP machine to treat sleep apnea.

This device is commonly used by millions of Americans suffering from the disorder, which interrupts breathing during sleep, according to The Sun.

The White House has confirmed that Biden uses the machine to improve his sleep and respiratory health.

Biden’s visit to Angola not only aims to strengthen bilateral relations but also seeks to reinforce the United States’ role in countering the influence of other powers on a strategically important continent.
