The Democratic Party is engaged in intense self-criticism following Kamala Harris’s defeat by Donald Trump.

Some members blame President Joe Biden for not withdrawing earlier to allow Harris to build a stronger campaign.

David Plouffe, Harris’s senior advisor, described the defeat as «devastating» and noted that the campaign «started from a deep hole.»

Party figures criticize Biden’s decision to remain in the race until July, after a disastrous debate against Trump.

Jim Manley, former aide to Senator Harry Reid, stated that the country «is heading in a very dangerous direction» and questioned Biden’s «arrogance.»

Since Tuesday, when Harris’s defeat was confirmed, Biden has remained silent, with a national address expected today.

Harris, for her part, acknowledged Trump’s victory and asserted her continued commitment to «bring light back to America.»

Many Democrats believe Biden’s advanced age, low popularity, and the post-pandemic wear and tear severely damaged the party.

Mark Longabaugh, former advisor to Bernie Sanders, argued that Biden should have stepped down earlier to allow the party time to develop a solid plan.

Tony West, former Associate Attorney General, praised Harris’s leadership and stated the campaign was conducted with «purpose, passion, courage, and love for the country.»

Though not on the ballot, many view this defeat as also a failure for Biden and his legacy.

For some Harris supporters, Biden’s decision to seek reelection until this summer essentially sealed the party’s defeat.

Andrew Yang, who ran against Biden in 2020, criticized the president’s delay in stepping down, suggesting an earlier departure in January could have altered the course.

Biden will leave office having supported Ukraine, overcome the pandemic, and passed an ambitious infrastructure plan.

Thom Reilly, a scholar at Arizona State University, noted that while some achievements may be recognized in the future, Biden is marked by this defeat.

Throughout the campaign, Harris struggled to differentiate herself clearly from the Biden administration, a challenge imposed by the limited time.

Harris’s team stated that an earlier withdrawal by Biden would have given them more time to develop a distinct and robust campaign.

Issues like rising prices and the immigration system weighed on voters in key states, affecting the party’s image.

On Wednesday, Harris expressed regret for not having more time to connect with voters and highlight her own proposals.

While Republicans prepare to control the White House and the Senate, Democrats have yet to determine control of the House.

Matt Bennett, vice president of the Third Way group, described this moment as one of the most devastating the party has faced.

The question of whether the party would have fared better without Biden will resonate among Democrats for a long time.
