An asteroid will impact Earth’s atmosphere but does not present a danger
Asteroid COWECP5 will enter the atmosphere over Eastern Siberia, creating a spectacular bright light but not a danger.
2024-12-03T17:40:56+00:00- Asteroid COWECP5 will impact the atmosphere.
- It does not present a danger to humans.
- Creates a visible bright car.
A recently discovered asteroid, identified as COWECP5, is on a collision course with Earth.
The asteroid is expected to enter the atmosphere over Eastern Siberia at 11:14 a.m. ET.
The small space object measures 27 inches in diameter and will burn up harmlessly in the atmosphere.
COWECP5 was detected by NASA’s ATLAS warning system, designed to predict impacts up to a week in advance.
Asteroid COWECP5: Early sighting and calculated trajectory
The sighting occurred just seven hours before impact, marking the twelfth time an asteroid has been accurately detected before it hits the atmosphere.
This is the fourth asteroid to impact the Earth’s atmosphere so far this year.
The Kitt Peak National Observatory, also funded by NASA, located the asteroid early on Tuesday.
Richard Moissl, head of planetary defense at ESA, reported that the Aegis system calculated its impact trajectory.
Aegis, originally used by the US Navy, predicted that the asteroid will enter the atmosphere 124 miles east of Lensk.
Alan Fitzsimmons, from Queen’s University of Belfast, assured that the asteroid does not represent any danger to people.
The phenomenon will create a bright and spectacular bolide visible for hundreds of kilometers around the impact site.
Scientists have reiterated that, due to its size, there will be no need for evacuations in Siberia.
According to a 2017 study, only asteroids at least 60 feet in diameter could be lethal if they hit Earth.
The early discovery of COWECP5 is a positive sign of advances in the detection of near-Earth objects (NEOs).

‘It’s a triumph for science and a spectacle for those in Siberia tonight,’ Fitzsimmons declared.
These advances allow astronomers to more accurately predict the paths of future asteroids.
The event, although harmless, reminds us of the importance of continuing to monitor our space environment.
