On Thursday, November 21, the quiet city of Escondido, San Diego, was shaken by tragedy when a 24-year-old man lost his life after being electrocuted while hanging Christmas lights near a high-voltage power line.

Antonio Pascual Mateo, a local resident, was decorating the roof of his home for the holiday season when the fatal accident occurred.

According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, Mateo was working near a high-voltage power line when he suffered the electrical shock.

“The deceased threw the lights over the power lines, causing an electrical shock. A 9-1-1 call was made. Paramedics arrived on the scene and found the deceased hanging upside down from a tree,” the Medical Examiner’s Office stated in a report.

Antonio Pascual Mateo’s Family Asks for Support

In response to this tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist the family with funeral costs and related expenses.

The fundraiser also aims to cover the cost of transporting Mateo’s body to his birthplace in Guatemala, where his mother resides, so she can give him a final farewell.

“We adjusted the goal after careful consideration of the expenses involved in making funeral arrangements here in CA,” the campaign states.

“Transporting him to Guatemala City for burial so he can finally rest in his birthplace and be received by his mother is our ultimate goal. He was a brother, a son, and an uncle. His name was Antonio Pascual. He had so much to live for, only 24 years old.”

“He had been working on putting Christmas lights around the tree. He always cared for his mother and family. Tragically, he was electrocuted by power lines while arranging the lights,” the post continues.

“He fell and became stuck in the tree for an hour. Rescue teams had to wait until the power company cut off the electricity,” it adds.

“Too late to save him, he will remain forever young. Christmas lights will always hold a special meaning for us, and he will stay in our hearts for eternity,” Antonio Pascual Mateo’s family concluded.

As of this report, the GoFundMe campaign had raised over $12,000, according to the Daily Mail.
