Just days before the end of his term, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador visited Sinaloa, a state ravaged by drug cartel violence.

The president highlighted that one of the primary goals is to ensure that children can attend school without fear.

López Obrador also stressed the importance of citizens being able to walk the streets without fear, according to the portal La Política Online.
To achieve this, he announced the deployment of around 1,000 military personnel to the region in hopes of restoring calm.

However, the visit from López Obrador and President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum was not without criticism.
Both leaders were met with protests over the lack of support for the city.

In these videos, citizens express frustration that the authorities have not paid adequate attention to their pressing issues.
Despite the criticism, Claudia Sheinbaum tried to ease tensions by acknowledging Sinaloa’s importance in maize production.
“Without maize, there is no country,” she stated, referring to Sinaloa being one of Mexico’s largest producers of the staple crop.

Sheinbaum affirmed that once she assumes the presidency, she will return to the state to continue development projects.
She also promised to work closely with Governor Rubén Rocha Moya for the benefit of the people of Sinaloa.
The visit by the two leaders comes at a critical time for Sinaloa, which has been the center of violent clashes.
The government’s efforts to curb violence have been widely questioned, with many believing the results have fallen short of expectations.
