In an interview on Fox News on Tuesday, Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, accused Mexico of being “ruled” by drug cartels and said the country was “petrified” that cartels could “remove the president in two minutes.”
These statements have generated controversy and concern in both Mexico and the United States.
López Obrador stressed that Trump’s rhetoric is due to the circumstances of an election campaign. «What my friend Trump says must be seen in the circumstances of the campaign,» said the Mexican president.
He recalled that in 2016, during his presidential campaign, Trump made similar statements that helped define his political rhetoric.

The Mexican president also mentioned that at the time, when Trump was president, he had been told he disagreed with the idea of considering Mexican drug traffickers as terrorists.
López Obrador explained that his position was based on respect for national sovereignty and avoiding foreign interventions in Mexico’s internal affairs.
In response to Trump’s criticism, Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s president-elect, also weighed in. Sheinbaum rejected Trump’s claims about the dominance of organized crime in the country and highlighted advances in security during the López Obrador administration.
“Mexico has made progress in reducing insecurity and we are going to make even more progress,” Sheinbaum said. She also cited statistics that show a significant reduction in the perception of insecurity, both nationally and in Mexico City during her term as head of government.
