For almost five years, América has tried different ways to win its 14th league crown. Up to now they have all failed, but this was another opportunity.

The Águilas looked to take the first step toward breaking their dry spell Thursday night when they visited reigning champion Tigres for the first leg game for the final of the Apertura tournament in Mexico.

América, one of the two most popular teams in Mexico, won their last championship on December 16, 2018 when they defeated Cruz Azul, according to AP.

Since then, their greatest achievement was reaching the final of the 2019 Apertura, which they lost to Monterrey, they then lost in the semifinals in the last three consecutive tournaments.

América and Tigres had their first clash and no one could take the lead, according to AP.

That changed on Sunday when two of the most dominant teams in Mexican soccer met again to compete in the Apertura tournament.

On Thursday, the Águilas took the lead with a goal from Henry Martín, but a defensive oversight in a corner kick gave the university team the tie with a header from Ozziel Herrera.

The champion team would be the one that wins the aggregate score or wins on penalties if the tie remains after 120 minutes.

“The most important thing is to do what you must and for me our team deserved better luck,” said Brazilian coach André Jardine.

«We set out to do something big from day one and on Sunday it will be time to pursue what we set out to do from the beginning,» he added, according to AP.

Jardine is only experiencing his first tournament with the Águilas, who are in their first final since the Apertura 2019 and are looking for their first title since the Apertura 2018.

If it achieve the goal they set, the azulcremas will reach 14 league titles and would separate themselves two from Chivas, which is the second most successful team in the country.
