Born in Mexico City on October 21, 1959, José Buenaventura Magaña is now 64.

He is not only an acclaimed actor and comedian but also a writer. He is known for his role in Cachún Cachún Ra Ra!

However, he has also appeared in soap operas, movies, plays and comedy shows.

He’s been married several times and has one daughter, Ana Paulina, who is also an actress.

In various interviews, Pepe Magaña has said that he spent just over three years in prison.

According to Milenio, he revealed that he met the drug trafficker Rafael Caro Quintero during that time.

He asserts that he never sold drugs and that he learned from his mistakes. Carmen Salinas and Rafael Inclán even visited him in prison.

«In prison, I sold alcohol and beer to survive. I sold them for three or four times what they cost on the street, and you have to pay security,» he said.

Before it was revealed that he had an incurable disease, many believed that Pepe Magaña’s funny facial expressions were intentional.

Recently, the actor gave a revealing interview to Gustavo Adolfo Infante for his show El Minuto Que Cambió Mi Destino.

During this conversation, he disclosed that his condition is hereditary and incurable.

«It’s called progressive muscular dystrophy, there are several types of the disease, mine affects my face and arms…» he stated.

In the same conversation, actor Pepe Magaña stated that his disease is most noticeable in his face.

Additionally, he revealed that over time, the muscles atrophy, lack protein and stop working.

He is not the only one in his family to suffer from this condition; his older sister also has the disease.

«She has been wheelchair-bound for about eight years now. It’s hard for me knowing that my sister is like this, and it’s very likely that I will end up the same,» he added.

Pepe Magaña stated that despite dealing with an incurable disease, he stays active by exercising.

However, he acknowledges that it’s not easy. He is currently being treated by a doctor in Mexico City who provides him with special medicine.

Other doctors are surprised by his progress. He says that he has quit partying, though he occasionally goes out and has «a couple of drinks.»

According to Debate, the comedian’s mother died 10 years ago from the same disease.
