Not everything is about superhero movies or sequels. This year, several Spanish-language films have filled all Latinos with great pride.

Starting on September 15, the National Hispanic Heritage Month will be celebrated in the United States, which is the perfect reason to remember some of the best films in this language.

In recent years, and considering the coronavirus pandemic, many people prefer to stay at home to watch their favorite movie rather than going to the cinema.

Platforms like Netflix or Disney+, among others, have raised their quality and have presented high-quality feature films.

Everyone shouts «Que viva Mexico!»

Although its release was originally scheduled for 2022, it wasn’t until March of this year that the film «Long Live Mexico!» was released.

Directed by Luis Estrada, this movie features performances by Alfonso Herrera, Damián Alcázar, Ana de la Reguera, and Joaquín Cosío, among others.

In this film, the story revolves around Pancho Reyes, who travels to his hometown with his wife and children after the death of his grandfather.

He never imagined the chaos he would experience with his relatives as the sole heir.

A movie that made a lot of ‘Buz’

«Ruido» is one of those movies that are difficult to watch but necessary in today’s world. Julieta Egurrola delivers the performance of her life.

Director Natalia Beristáin also took charge of the screenplay for this film, along with Diego Enrique Osorno and Alo Valenzuela Escobedo.

Based on real events, «Ruido» tackles an issue that seems to have no end: the disappearance of women in Mexico.

Despite its harshness, critics were impressed by this story. It was also very well-received by Netflix subscribers.

A story that ‘touches’ the heart

Also available on Netflix and considered one of the top 5 Spanish-language films of 2023 is the movie «El último vagón.»

Adriana Barraza, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2007, stars in this story.

Teacher Georgina, in a rural area of Mexico, is determined to make a difference in the lives of her young and clever students.

Barraza is joined by actor Memo Villegas, known for his role as Lieutenant Harina, and Fátima Molina, as well as young actors.

Fun from beginning to end

Although it went unnoticed by many, «Los (casi) ídolos de Bahía Colorada» is one of the most entertaining Spanish-language films of 2023.

The young actors Harold Azuara and Benny Emmanuel, known for their roles in the series «La CQ,» star in this movie.

«Los (casi) ídolos…» also features the participation of the renowned actress and comedian Nora Velázquez in the role of Conny.

Very different from each other, Romeo and Preciado are two brothers who seek to pay tribute to their recently deceased father.

La Gran Seducción, recently released

To conclude the countdown of the 5 best Spanish-language films of 2023, we present «La gran seducción,» recently released on Netflix.

Once again, actor Memo Villegas takes the lead role, accompanied by Yalitza Aparicio y Pierre Louis, among other actors.

According with web site Indie Hoy,the critics described this film as «simple, pleasant, and surprising.» It is an adaptation of a Canadian story.

«Los residents of a forgotten fishing village devise a series of schemes to seize a unique opportunity to save it from ruin,» says the synopsis.
