Did you keep a diary as a teen? Maybe one with a jewel encrusted front and a lock so your snoopy little brother (or Mom) couldn’t see the inner secrets of your soul?  Surprisingly, writing journals is not just for teens or narcissistic adults. According to Harvard Business School Professor Francesca Gino, “Psychology research shows that writing about our life experiences has many positive effects, including increasing students’ grade-point averages, re-employment after losing a job, and improving memory.”

It’s not just the musings of the rich and famous that make for interesting journals. Anyone who wants a little introspection can find great benefits and value in writing journals. It can be a record of your daily joys or struggles and give you a way to vent without blasting those around you. Get started with your personal journal today—locks are optional.

1. Get to Know Yourself

Journal writing is the chance to be completely honest with feelings and fears. It’s a chance to express your wishes and desires without ridicule.

2. Embrace Serenity

Expressing your thoughts on paper gives you an opportunity to face issues that make you angry or afraid and helps you regain a sense of control.

3. Write Your Own Story

It’s the story only you can write. Think of your journal as an unpublished autobiography where you don’t only muse about the things that excite or irritate you, but also a place where you can document your life.

4. Spot Patterns

Are you expressing the same emotions over and over? Journal writing will help you discover what it is that keeps you awake at night or making you extremely happy.

5. Discover Your Dreams

Journal writing gives you the change to list what you really want to do. Since it’s your private diary, no one can belittle your dreams or mock you for your aspirations.

6. Express Gratitude

Make your first line every day an expression of gratitude. It doesn’t have to be lofty or even well-written. If you’re grateful for having the dog happy to see you at the end of the day, say so.

7. Improve Your Career

Write a paragraph about work every day. Did you learn something new, maybe think of a way to improve efficiency that you want to develop and share? Keep a note of your progress as you move up the corporate ladder so you remember what entry level work was like.

8. Pass on Your Story

Historians love journals, as they provide insight to everyday life in bygone eras. Just think what your ancestors could have told you.

9. Organize Your Life

Putting your thoughts on paper makes it easier to organize everything: travel plans, budgets and life in general. A journal should illustrate personal growth as well as day-to-day fun.

10. Make Time

Make a commitment to your journal and write every day, even if it’s just a paragraph or two.
